Oct. 24-27

 This week we went to the Military Museum. There were real sized planes and realistic mannequins. There was also a soldier that fought in Afghanistan. We learned about different wars. We also learned the stories of several Inginenous people that fought in the wars. We got to handle artifacts. Some of the coolest artifacts were 2 grenades and a gas mask. In math we have been working on word problems and trying to solve them with addition, subtraction or multi-steps.  We practiced looking for important words and information.  In writing we continued on our personal narratives. We published them on Chromebooks.  In gym we did soccer inside and outside. We played 2 mini soccer games in the gym. They were really fun.  We started our Book Clubs this week. Each group is reading a different novel. We meet with the teachers once a week and read and talk about our books.  We finished our read aloud "The Bad Beginning". Oct. 17-21

 In math the grade 5's added decimals. We also worked on subtraction with regrouping. We played a game called Race to $1000. The grade 6's worked on adding positive and negative integers. In science we went on a walk to a park. We sat the park and observed trees and weather. We were focusing on mind, body, heart and spirit.  The grade 5s started learning about clouds. The grade 6's stared learning about fungus, mushrooms, conks and lichens. These are all decomposers. In social studies the grade 5's were learning about WW1. We were getting ready for our trip to the Millitary Museum.  The grade 6's  focused on the Charter of Rights and Freedom. In writing we continued working on our personal narritives. We revised our work by adding details, removing unessesary words, moving words and sentences and substituting words with juicier words. In gym we went in line skating twice.  This week in art we did leaf prints. We went outside and picked fresh leaves off the grass. Then we came in and we painted white paint on the leaves and made prints on black paper. Then we used sponges and red, orange and yellow paint for the backgrounds. In gym we started inline skating. It was very fun. We will do it again on Wednesday and Friday next week. We read a chapter in a book called Braiding Sweetgrass. We are learning to look at things with heart, mind, spirit and body (from the medicine wheel). We drew the medicine wheel in our visual journals. Next week we will take our journals to a park to practice embracing nature in this way.  In writing we continued with our personal narratives. Some of us acted out our stories. We used juicy words to describe our stories to make it sound emotional, deep and relatable.  In math we learned how to round decimals and whole numbers.  This week in math, we practiced putting decimals between other numbers, and writing decimals in standard and expanded form. We played Decimal Rock 'n Roll, Betweeners and What's that Place?  On Thursday we had a place value check in. In gym we played Indigenous games outside. Some of them were called Scream and Run, Double Ball and Crows and Cranes. We also told stories with rocks. In science, the grade 5's went outside to measure windspeed and wind direction. We used wind vanes, and anemometers. We also learned about the water cycle. The grade 6's classified leaves looking at type, margin and shape. We also started learning about the food chain and nutrient cycles. In social studies the grade 6's were learning about rights and responsibilites. We compared them with each other.
