Nov. 14-18

 This week was our Fall Showcase. It was about the 4 seasons. We played a song with xylephones, glockenspeils, boom whackers, hand bells and resonator bells. We also sang 2 songs. We made a tall fall tree as a prop for the show. It was fun and a little nerve wracking.  In writing we worked on 'great beginnings' for our stories. We discussed 4 great ways to start. They are, action, ask a question, describe the setting or describe a characater. We continuted writing about the best day of our lives. In math we have been learning how multiply large numbers. We practiced 3 different methods. These methods were, box method, lattice method and the standard algorithm. Next week we will get to choose our preferred method to solve multiplication questions. We have also been working on basic multiplication facts up to 9x9.  In science the grade 5's learned about what fabrics are best for the weather elements such as wind, rain and cold. Nov. 7 - 10

 In writing this week, we all wrote a fictional narratives based off a picture of a lost cat.  We tried to use figurative language, imagination, elements of a story and our senses. After we wrote our stories, we edited and revised. Then we went through our own writing looking for evidence of figurative language, senses, character description, setting and our favourite sentence. We also created haikus about Remembrance Day to show that we remember the soldiers who have passed away.  In math we learned about factors and arrays using tiles. Factors are numbers that can be multiplied together to make a target number. For example, the factors of 12 are 4,3,1,12 2 and 6. We practiced some multiplication and division. In art we used pastels to create close up poppies inspired by Georgia O'keefe. We used our poppies to decorate for the Remembrance Day assembly.  In science the grade 5's we learned about the 4 main types of precipitation. They are rain, sleet, snow and hail. The grade 6

Oct. 31- Nov. 4

 This week we wrote Haiku poems about Remembrance Day. We also finished writing our personal narratives and turned them in.  In art we finished our cool and warm colour trees. We focused on value, texture and colour. In math we had an addition and subtraction check in. We started learning about multiplication and division. We started a new read aloud book called Out of My Mind.  It is about a girl with a disbility where she can't move or talk but she has a photographic memory.  We started a basketball unit in gym. We worked on passing and dribbling and ball handling. We played Hot Potato.  In science the grade 5's did an experiment to make a cloud in a jar. We learned about different types of clouds and are making chart to show all the types of clouds and where they are in the sky. The grade 6's made posters on different types of fungi.  In social studies the grade 6's discussed the different types of rights such as educational rights, mobility rights, equality rights a
