This week in writing we were searching for key words in non-fiction texts. Our class used the key words to make summaries of the main ideas. We read an article called 'Why does Jello Jiggle?' Everyone started brainstorming topics to research.
In grade 5 social studies, we learned about the history of Canada and Samuel De Champlain. When he got to Canada, he had to make a shelter fast, before winter. He was the first one to make a trading route. The grade 6's learned the differences between cabinet ministers and MLAs.
In grade 5 science we mixed liquids to see if they made a solution. We also layered liquids and learned that liquids can have different densities. We learned that water has a very strong surface tension, and rubbing alcohol doesn't. The grade 6's worked on trading cards on different planets. We did research to find out facts like, how many moons they have, what the surface is like, orbital period and rotational period.
In French the grade 6's watched a presentation about late French Immersion for grade 7 (at Woodman School). Our class started learning about Carnaval de Quebec, the biggest winter festival in the world. We learned the mascot is Bonhomme who is a 7 foot snowman that lives in a giant ice palace. There is ice sculpting and delicious, unique food at the festival.
In math we learned how to put mixed fractions and improper fractions on a number line. The grade 6's practiced making common denominators in order to add or subtract fractions.
