Jan. 16- 20

 This week in science, the grade 6's learned about the phases of the moon. Jan. 21 will be the new moon. This means that we won't be able to see the moon. The next phase will be the waxing crescent. The grade 5's were mixing liquids together to see if they made solutions or mixtures. We learned about homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures. 



In math we practiced converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and improper fractions into mixed numbers.




In gym we played floor hockey games. The gym was divided into 3 sections. We also practiced puck handling and passing. 

In writing we practiced finding key words in non-fiction articles. Key words are words that explain the main idea. We are going to use the key words to write a summary in our own words. 



In social studies, the grade 6's learned about the similarities between MLAs and cabinet ministers. The grade 5's started learning about the history of Canada. They also presented their regions, resources and landforms and climates. 

In art we are learning about Vincent Van Gogh. We are recreating "The Starry Night" painting. Van Gogh created a new style of art called Expressionism. He used a lot of bright colours in his work.

 This week in morning challenge we did number riddles. They got progressively harder each day. In writing we worked on our Wonderopolis pages. We finished our paragraphs and added them into a template. We highlighted "Wonder Words" and linked them to a dictionary. Some of us started to make a quiz about our topic. We are recording our voices by reading our work, and adding in a video and pictures.  On Monday, we looked up the meanings of Indigenous words that we use daily. For example, chinook, Deerfoot and Kananaskis. We wrote the meanings and drew a picture clue or added a photo.  In math we were doing the distributive property to simplify algebraic equations. We combined like terms. We solved algebraic equations by using inverse operations to isolate the variable.  For example, 2a + 4 = 16   a = 6 We worked on questions around the room. Nov. 28- Dec. 2

 In writing we worked on our fictional narratives. We practiced writing a problem, making it worse twice and then solved the problem. We wrote our jot notes on stickies.  We also watched a video story about the 4 seasons and learned about the parts of a story. The parts are, characters (protagonist/antagonist), setting, plot, climax, resolution and theme.  In art we used watercolour pencils to create penguins. In math the grade 5's had a multiplication check in. We also wrote multiplication word problems. We are now starting division. The grade 6's started doing factor trees. We learned about prime factorization. Some other students worked on skip counting by 2, 3, 5, and 9. For Fluency Friday we played Multiplication Squares. In gym we used scoops and scooters. We also played a dodgeball game called Infection. In science the grade 5's had a weather quiz. We are now finished our weather unit. The grade 6's looked at a timeline about how forests have been used over time....

May 1- 4

 In math this week we continued to learn about perimeter and area. Some of the grade 6's learned about volume. We went outside and measured things that were shaped like rectangles and calculated the area, perimeter and volume. In gym we learned how to play pillow pollo. We also played Bench Dodgeball and Infection.  In science the grade 6's tested fabric to see if it absorbed or repelled water, how it felt, what the weave was like, if the dye came out in water, and if it wrinkled or stretched. The grade 5's got electricity passports and had to solve several electricity challenges.  In social studies, the grade 5's have been researching about the Famous Five. The grade 6's are learning about the levels of government in Ancient Greece. In writing we have been working on persuasive writing.
