In science this week, the grade 6's made parachutes and paper airplanes. We were learning about drag and the forces of flight. We made a small, medium and large parachute to see how they would fall and which one would have the most drag. We dropped them from the top of the stairwell. With our paper airplanes, we used paperclips to adjusts the weight. We tried to fly them through a hoop. The grade 5's learned about the 5 different types of wetlands in Alberta. They are swamp, fen, bog, marsh and pond. We also started to learn about food chains and food webs. In social studies the grade 6's learned about Wompum Belts and what the patterns mean. We learned about the treaty with Haudenosaunee and the Europeans. They made a peace treaty. They put all the weapons under a tree and called it the Peace Tree. If someone put their weapons there they could use the tree for shelter. The grade 5's made a grocery list to see if we could survive the Great Depression. We only had $2.50

This week in math we learned about probability. We used the words certain, impossible and likely. We used a paper bag and put coloured tiles in it. Then we pulled out tiles one at a time and recorded the colour. We did it 20 times and recorded our answers on a t- chart. We then changed our answers into fractions.  In science, the grade 6's made balloon rockets. We blew up balloons and taped them to straws. We put the straw on a string that stretched across the room diagonally. We then let the balloons go and they shot across the room. The farthest one went almost the whole way. We were learning about propulsion and Newtons Third Law. The grade 5's had a quiz on electricity and magnetism and started a unit on Wetlands. We compared lakes to wetlands and started to learn why wetlands are important.  In social studies the grade 5's were learning about the Great Depression also known as the Dirty Thirties. We learned that the Great Depression had 10 years of drought and was pol

In gym this week we played football. We learned how to catch and throw the football. On one of the days we played Benchball Dodgeball.  In science, the grade 5's had their electricity projects marked. We then took our projects apart. Next week we have an electricity and magnetism quiz. The grade 6's learned about the different parts of a plane and the 4 forces of flight. Avery brought an airplane, and we went outside and took turns throwing it.  In social studies, the grade 5's finished their WW1 propaganda posters. We answered some questions that described the poster. There were some extra question about the Industrial Revolution such as, "What is urbanization?" and "What is industrialization?" The grade 6's got back their test scores from the Ancient Anthens Democracy quiz. Next week we are starting to learn about Iroquois Confederacy. In music we finished our recorder unit. We played some solo recorder songs for Ms. Dafoe. We also took a paper te

In writing this week we did research on the candidates for the Provincial Election. We used this information to help us decide how to vote. On Thursday we all voted. In music, we had a quiz. Ms. Dafoe played a few notes and we had to choose which notes she was playing. We started to play individual songs for Ms. Dafoe and we also did a small group song in front of the class.  In math we did algebraic equations for a pattern rule ( for example n+ 2, where n= the term number). We then graphed our patterns using a cartesian plane. We always look at the x axis (the horizonal one) first and then the y axis. In gym we played camouflage in the dip outside. It was hard to hide but it was fun. In science, the grade 6's did experiment centers about Bernoulli's Principle (which is about air pressure). One thing we tried, was to blow into a funnel to make a ping pong ball float. When we blew in from the bottom it didn't work, but when we blew from above it did. The grade 5's finis

In writing this week we did social studies. We learned about types of government. We built towers and each group had their own type of government to use. For example anarchy, dictatorship, oligarchy and democracy. We then had to answer questions for each type of government with a partner.  In math this week we used a table of values to find the rule using an algebraic expression. For example     n + 9 or 3n +2.  This was challenging.  The grade 6's had a social studies test on Ancient Athens Democracy. The grade 5's made propaganda posters for WW1. We learned about what was happening in factories during WW1. Women and children worked in the factories. Sickness spread very easily because they only had 1 day off each week. The children had to go between the big machinery and could easily lose limbs.  In science, the grade 5's were building electricity projects. Some of us are building lunchbox alarms and some of us are making flashlights. The grade 6's started learning a

This week the grade 5's made patterns that increase or decrease. We used tiles to make shape patterns. We put our information into a table of values. The grade 6's also worked on patterns. We used cartesian planes to graph our patterns from our table of values. In writing we did persuasive writing to try to make people believe what we believe. We picked topics that we are passionate about. We shared them with other classmates to see if we could convince them. We edited our work to make sure we had a solid paragraph with a hook and conclusion. In science, the grade 6's tested fabric scraps to see how they would burn. We also did tire rubbings on cars to see how the tracks were similar or different. We had a quiz on Evidence and Investigation. The grade 5's finished our Electricity Passport. There were 4 challenges we had to complete and then write a reflection. We are now starting our electricity  projects. We made bluprints to start planning. Next week we will start bu

In math this week we continued to learn about perimeter and area. Some of the grade 6's learned about volume. We went outside and measured things that were shaped like rectangles and calculated the area, perimeter and volume. In gym we learned how to play pillow pollo. We also played Bench Dodgeball and Infection.  In science the grade 6's tested fabric to see if it absorbed or repelled water, how it felt, what the weave was like, if the dye came out in water, and if it wrinkled or stretched. The grade 5's got electricity passports and had to solve several electricity challenges.  In social studies, the grade 5's have been researching about the Famous Five. The grade 6's are learning about the levels of government in Ancient Greece. In writing we have been working on persuasive writing. We also wrote poems using cut out words.  Dictated by Lillian, Isabella, Kingston and Kai
